No stranger to controversy, Rupert Murdoch and News Corp have seen numerous scandals unravel beginning around 2009, then erupt in 2011, after a series of investigations revealed one of their publications News of the World to be central players in a phone hacking scandal that proved to be a small piece of a much larger pattern of wrongdoing. News of the World was shuttered as a result. 90 people were arrested, and 16 charged with crimes, including accusations of police bribery, and invasion of privacy by hacking into the Royal Families phone lines. It was further revealed they hacked the phones of Government ministers; a Member of Parliament; military chiefs; a leading media figure; Premiership footballers; and celebrities.
